VINURI is a hybrid hospitality space located along St John’s Street, Valletta, designed to operate across multiple modes of use throughout the day and evening. The project occupies a compact footprint within a historic palazzo, originally serving as one of the building’s entrances before being adapted over time for commercial use.

The primary constraint of the project was the limited and irregular footprint, particularly within the former entrance space, where existing architectural features were retained within the ceiling. Rather than treating these elements as background conditions, the design was structured to give them prominence, transforming the first room into the main public seating area and anchoring the project within its architectural context.

The guiding design intent was to reinterpret the traditional Maltese bar and kazin typology through a contemporary spatial language. Respecting the character of Valletta’s urban fabric, the interior was conceived as an intimate yet flexible environment, capable of functioning as a daytime café, an evening wine bar, and a setting for small private gatherings and events.

Spatial flexibility informed both layout and furnishing strategy. Seating was deliberately restrained to avoid compressing the space, with continuous bench seating and stools used to maintain openness, while more conventional tables and chairs were introduced selectively. In contrast, the secondary room, which lacked existing architectural character, was given a stronger material and chromatic identity through the design of the bar, balancing functionality with atmosphere within a tight spatial envelope.

The resulting interior prioritises adaptability, intimacy, and architectural clarity, demonstrating how a compact historic space can support contemporary hospitality use without sacrificing openness or character.
