The Dental Practice

The Dental Practice is a healthcare project located at The Granaries, Floriana, set within a historic building context. The commission involved both architectural and interior design, developed to accommodate a fully functioning dental clinic within an extremely constrained footprint of approximately 15 square metres.

The primary challenge of the project was to reconcile clinical requirements, regulatory compliance, and patient flow within a very limited floor area. The original premises, previously operating as a barber shop, benefitted from higher than usual headroom. This condition allowed the design to expand vertically through excavation, transforming a single-storey space into a three-level clinic comprising a basement and ground floor for patients, with an upper level dedicated to staff facilities.

Working within the existing structural envelope and historic fabric, the architectural strategy focused on careful spatial zoning and circulation. Clinical and non-clinical areas were clearly separated, ensuring efficient workflow for staff while maintaining clarity and comfort for patients moving through the space. The introduction of multiple levels allowed the programme to be accommodated without overloading any single floor, preserving usability despite the compact footprint.

Beyond functional and regulatory performance, particular attention was given to the patient experience. Rather than adopting a conventional, sterile clinical aesthetic, the design sought to create a calmer and more reassuring environment. Material choices, lighting, and spatial sequencing were carefully considered to reduce anxiety and promote comfort, allowing atmosphere to emerge as a direct outcome of architectural decisions rather than applied decoration.

The project demonstrates how rigorous architectural planning and integrated interior design can transform a highly constrained and regulated brief into a functional, compliant, and humane healthcare environment.
