one80 Izakaya

ONE80 Izakaya is a hospitality interior located in Mgarr, Gozo, developed as a new fit-out within a previously disused garage space. The project involved working within a constrained footprint, transforming an unassuming shell into a tightly composed dining environment with a strong spatial and cultural identity.

The primary design intent was to create an immediate sense of transition, transporting visitors into a distinctly Japanese spatial atmosphere from the moment of entry. Rather than relying on overt stylistic cues, the design was informed by extensive research into Japanese culture, architecture, and interiors, where space, materiality, proportion, and symbolism play a fundamental role.

Cultural references were interpreted with restraint and intent. Considerations such as the meaning of numbers and colours, the tactile quality of materials, and the layering of textures informed the spatial composition and detailing throughout the interior. Each element was designed to carry purpose, avoiding decorative gestures and ensuring that atmosphere emerged from structure, material, and sequence rather than applied theme.

Working within the limits of the existing footprint, the layout was carefully choreographed to balance intimacy and functionality, creating a dining experience that feels immersive yet controlled. The resulting interior distinguishes itself from typical Asian-inspired restaurant fit-outs by prioritising authenticity and spatial coherence, delivering a hospitality environment that is experiential, deliberate, and culturally grounded.
